Secret of WFH Based On A Three-Year Remote Work Experience

Hi, how are you?

Ako po si Suni. Nama saya Suni, 저는 강순희입니다. 康 淳姫(かん すに)と申します。

Here’s a photo of me and my teammates who are also currently working from home:

I’m a South Korean who was born and raised in Japan. My nationality when I was born in Japan was North Korea. I then changed my nationality from North to South when I was 24 years old, and have worked in Japan for more than 10 years before moving to the Philippines seven years ago, and finally, moved to Malaysia three years ago.

Yes, I was a North Korean. I visited there when I was 14 years old. I can totally understand and relate to the atmosphere of the KDrama, Crash Landing On You (CLOY) Have you watched it? Not yet? You must watch it. Watching Netflix is one of the secrets to surviving the lockdown.

ooommmgggggg

Let’s get back on track.

Yes, I have to talk about the “Secret Tips of Working From Home (WFH)”.

I moved to Malaysia three years ago and am working from home since then.

I have been supporting the PH and ID teams through remote work.

Yes, to tell you the truth, even if many people have been forced to do WFH because of lockdown, it has been my daily life since the last three years and now.

MCO (Movement Control Order) has started here in Malaysia since March 18, and there is no significant change in my life.

So, let me share how to survive WFH based on my 3 years experience.

1. Arrange your work environment

Carl, one of my co-workers, wrote that having a proper workstation at home helps you condition to be in “work mode.” You can read his article here.

I strongly agree.

Let me share mine.

Macbook Air 2019 model

Thanks YOYO! I love YOYO! I renewed my laptop last year. Latest model makes me high.

iPad(7th generation)

It’s difficult for me to “attend online meeting” and “edit docs during the meeting” at the same time. My iPad is mainly to attend the meeting. During the meeting, I can see the slides on my laptop. It’s very convenient for me because I can see both attendee and docs at the same time.

Lovely mug with coffee

I’m addicted by coffee as daughter of coffee shop owner lol

I hope you find a suitable style for you.

2. Do daily meetings, 1on1s, or a quick calls

If my friend asks me “Don’t you feel alone? How do you motivate yourself?”

I would say –

“I’m feeling sad! Always sad! I’m alone!! It’s true!”

And I would also say that “online meeting motivates me” 10am, I attend the Daily Meeting with the Product Team.

2 or 3 times a week, I have 1on1 calls with my co-workers.

I often have a quick call if I need someone’s help. I know that talking with someone has a big effect on our overall health no matter how little time spent, and even if the agenda is a quick discussion or catch up.

 • Daily meeting reminds me of my tasks for the day.
 • 1on1s or quick call reminds me like “I’m talking to someone in the office”

And, other than that, I can talk, I can smile, and these make me happy. It has a direct effect and connection to my performance. I didn’t expect such impact though.

3. Make healthier choices!

Being healthy is one of things that doesn’t have a price tag.

Eat well and sleep well.

You can be productive as long as you are healthy

Those are the principles I live by, and I stick to it as much as I could. I have been practicing it all throughout my work-from-home experience. Let me wrap up again!

 • Arrange work environment as much as you like
 • Do daily meetings, 1on1s or quick calls
 • Make healthier choices!

and as a bonus – watch your favourite movie or TV show!

That’s it!

Hope it helps you while you continue to work from home.

Stay safe💕
Suni 😊
